| | Community Car hire needed in Telegraph hill? « Thread Started on Jun 21, 2005, 5:40pm » | |
I live on the hill and use a community car hire scheme( naturally living and working in London I have no need for a car on a permanent basis) which is based in various locations around london, the closest to us is either Greenwich or East dulwich. If enough people are interested then the community will put a car in the area. The community is streetcar and I think it would be a very useful addition to the area. Cost is £5 per hour and various odds and sods but nothing too expensive. By the way just in case I have broken some advertising bylaw here I really have no allegencies to steetcar so any such scheme would do, this is just the one I happen to know about. anyone else interested???

That sounds very interesting. Do you think the web site, the forums etc., could be used to make such a scheme work around here? If so, let me know and we can look at the best way to build it in.

I think a bit of public support from the area should persuade the company to come to the hill. Their website www.mystreetcar.co.uk. This site naturally tells you all you need to know about the scheme, they also have a link which tells them that you want a street car in the area, I presume the more people who request it the more likely they will adopt the area for their next car...

This is one of the more sensible ideas I've read on this forum.
I wonder what sort of size vehicle you had in mind?
It would be good to have something that could lug a fair amount of stuff around in but still be comfortable/easy to drive so an SUV, 4x4 affair might be best. A Lexus RX400 would be great but maybe out of the cost bracket but better than a white van.

| I looked at this site and their FAQs and it looks really, really good. (My mother told me how in Oxford during the War there was effectively a pool of presumably rather grotty bicycles that people would just use to go to where they wanted and then leave on the bike racks for the next person and so on.)
To widen the publicity beyond those reading this forum shall we put up some posters to refer to the website and the phone number for those who don't have internet access? I would be happy to put something together (much more fun than work or ironing) and if anyone can print a few off and put them up on their local trees please send your e-mail details to Paul or Malcolm (ths@baccma.co.uk) and I will send it out to you. (Sorry to be cagey about my own e-mail address but I have remarkably little spam and want to keep things that way.)
Also I notice that they prefer off street parking if they can - does anyone have such a space they can rent out? Otherwise I suppose suitable sites would be the echelon parking in Kitto Road by the Centre or somewhere down Waller Road.

Maybe we should revive the bike pooling scheme too. It'd be very helpful for me since my bike wheel was pinched. I don't mind if it has a basket, spokey-dokeys, stabilisers, anything.I just wanna ride.Without being hassled by the man.

I have just had a quick chat with streetcar and they say that they are looking at the area and the biggest problem they have is somewhere secure for the car to be parked. Does anyone have any ideas we could suggest to them?

How many people are needed in a scheme before it can function? (Not something I noticed in the FAQs but I was skipping through it at work.) Something I had thought of but rejected because it might mean too many people having keys to the padlock was the bit of hard standing in the Churchyard. It could, though, be explored if this is a make or break factor in the scheme happening at all.
Another option would be to ask the Centre to open up one of the panels in the space under Cafe Orange. Again, exploration needed to see how it could work.
Or there are some garages for rent I think towards the bottom of Erlanger. It might cost too much but could be worth exploring.
PS - I see the padlock question is dealt with on other sites by PIN numbers with the combination being issued with the booking. I am putting it to the Centre and Church that they consider this.

I asked for any sort of numbers when i spoke to streetcar and they said it doesn't neccessarily work that way, rather the secure parking was more an issue. The lady I spoke to mentioned they were looking at the area at present but also, central Greenwich, Lewisham, Deptford etc and being a bit lazy I would prefer a car on my doorstep ( and in a small way )would feel that the forum has helped to make the life on the hill a bit better, which is nice. Some of the car parking spaces seem to be on peoples drives or outside their houses, others are based in commercial property parking spaces, I wonder if sainsburys could help out the community?

| Well, they did nothing towards sponsoring the Grand Re-opening (the Company has its Charity for the Year and does not as a matter of policy sponsor local enterprises) so maybe they can be shamed into doing something that does not have to come out of someone's budget. If you would like the names and contact details do e-mail Malcolm for them on ths@baccma.co.uk.

I have got in touch with streetcar to find out what they need from us with regards to secure parking and numbers of people interested in the scheme, I will let you all know when I have any answer. I have also emailed Malcolm asking for the sainsburys contact details to see if that avenue is any use. (thank you Tamsin)

I see how this could be useful for people who can be flexible with their journeys, but with no guarantee of availability it's not much use for commuting. The small size available isn't much use for family trips either. Good luck to them, however, if they can remove just one car off the road round here.
As to a location, why not the churchyard at the top of the hill - it isn't used for anything and would be more central for people living here?

| Have you heard anything yet? I've tried putting them in touch with the Centre to see about off-street parking in the Churchyard or creating some garage space under Cafe Orange but the ball is rather in their court. And would anyone care to put up some more posters?
